ARGUMENTATIE:
Meer kunst in de openbare ruimte is een veel gehoorde wens onder IJburgers. Dit concrete projectvoorstel heeft veel positieven en negatieve reacties losgemaakt. Uit de reacties komt naar voren dat het voorstel voor menigeen een aantal stappen overslaat die nodig zijn voor een zorgvuldige afweging. Om een zorgvuldig proces te kunnen doorlopen wordt in het gebiedsplan 2018 een project opgenomen onder de titel "Kunstwerk op IJburg".

We support the idea of creating an Art Boulevard of local public sculpture to inspire the community and create distinction for IJburg Internationally. We are proposing the first in what we hope will be a series of public sculptures along Bert Haanstrakade (to be known as Ijburg’s Art Boulevard). “Seats of Power” (2013) is the creation of IJburg artist Julia Mandle in an unusual collaboration with her artist mother Gayle Wells Mandle. A wooden version of the sculpture has already toured several museums. Now the artists propose making the sculpture in bronze to be placed outdoors along the waters’ edge on Bert Haanstrakade. The sculpture links apx sixty chairs to form a towering shape that leans toward the empty end of it’s tilted base. An appropriate symbol for IJburg, which teams with the spirit of neighbors joining together to make the community a better place. The sculpture will be a fitting accompaniment to the popular 100 meters long red bench sculpture “Space to Take Place” created ten years ago by Claudia Linders.

Gewenst resultaat

“Seats of Power” will make a strong impression along the waterfront and provide an inspiring place for pleasure – both viewing and play- and contemplation. We hope this first project will launch an Art Boulevard that will bring international attention and cultural distinction to IJburg.
- Give presence to art in Ijburg
- Launch the idea of an Art Boulevard with the first sculpture made by an internationally recognized, local artist
- Create a symbol for the community’s involvement, which is a trait/kenmerk of Ijburg
- Involve community in the making of the sculpture, by inviting the neighborhood to donate chairs to be cast into bronze and included in the final sculpture.
- Highlight Bert Haanstrakade and the beautiful frame of the waterline
- In the scope of this proposal in 2018, the artists will launch their project by conducting necessary research (structural engineering and permits), secure funding and partners, building community awareness and involvement.
- At the conclusion of 2018, the artists hope to unveil the first chairs of the sculpture on Bert Haanstrakade and have laid the necessary ground work to continue the production of the sculpture in 2019. The target for the unveiling of the total sculpture will be 2019.
